It really is no secret that honey is often referred to as ‘Nature’s Nectar’ and I am sure you have read a plethora of articles on the benefits of honey from its’ high antioxidant qualities, to lowering triglycerides and improving cholesterol levels to healing burns. But did you know that adding it to hot water takes it to a whole other level?
Weight Management – If you crave sugary drinks then substitute your high calorific, high sugar, but empty calorie sodas for honey water. Yes, I know its sugar but honey is a natural sugar and therefore a healthy source of calories. It will also help you ward off any sugary cravings you have, therefore calories are reduced and you are one step closer to losing weight.
Morning Routine – I am a huge advocate of warm water and lemon juice first thing in the morning before you consume breakfast but if lemon is not your thing then try honey in warm water. Your digestive system will improve and the antiseptic benefits of honey will help relieve the acidity in your stomach whilst increasing the production of intestinal mucus. It also helps to hydrate the colon and infuse water into your stool which ultimately means you will be passing more easily and regularly.
Improves Immune System – Raw, organic honey is absolutely loaded with enzymes, vitamins and minerals that protects us from bacteria. In fact a study presented at the Society for General Microbiology’s Spring Conference in Harrogate, UK found that Manuka honey may even help reverse bacterial resistance to antibiotics.
Soothe a Sore Throat – With winter looming in on us ensure you have plenty of honey at hand. Hot water and honey can help reduce the soreness and irritation a sore throat brings. The honey actually coats the throat whilst the warm water is very soothing. If your cough is actually caused by irritation from a sore throat it will also help reduce a cough.
Natural Detox – Honey and warm water will help flush toxins from the body, the more ‘regular’ you are the more toxins that are being dispelled. Add a little lemon juice to the mix and it will also increase urination dispelling toxins more frequently and keeping your urinary tract healthy.
Reduction of Gas – Yep, drinking a glass of warm water and honey helps with that as well, the honey actually neutralizes the gas. One or two tablespoons of honey before heavy meals is the best way to thwart indigestion, and if you’ve already overindulged, add honey and lemon to warm water to help move the food through the digestive track.
So start boiling that kettle and try it, you might be surprised how much you like it. Remember raw organic honey is the best and if you can get it from your local area you will find that it will help with allergies as well.
