Ever heard the term “slipped disc?” If you have then you will know it is painful and can cause continual discomfort day in day out.

Actually a slipped disc or bulging disc is usually considered a normal part of aging. Some discs most likely begin to bulge as a part of both the aging process and the degeneration process of the intervertebral disc. Funnily enough a bulging disc is not necessarily a sign that anything serious is happening to your spine.

A high percentage of the pain we feel is as a result of pressure on the nerve roots that leave the spinal column.

As we age it is natural that the gel within our discs begin to dehydrate and shrink causing the exterior cartilage to crack, irritating the surrounding nerves and muscles.

Small tears to the outer part of the disc can produce a full spectrum of pain response, from no pain to debilitating chronic pain and will often vary from person to person.

This will be good news to many sufferers though as new research shows that zapping the back with electrical currents reduces pain from a slipped disc more than the traditional steroid jab.

It only takes 10 minutes to perform this non-invasive procedure and involves applying pulses of energy to nerve roots near the spine. Results showed that it eased discomfort by 40 per cent more than steroid injections.

Scientists believe it offers hope for the thousands battling lower back pain that have not been given any relief from conventional treatments.

Italian researchers tested pulsed radio frequency (pRF) on 128 patients with a slipped disc who had experienced no relief from conventional treatments.

The therapy works by ‘stunning’ painful nerves in the spine via an electrical probe.

The participants’ symptoms were then compared a year later to a group of 120 ‘control’ patients who were given a steroid injection.

The scientists, led by Dr Alessandro Napoli at Sapienza University in Rome, found zapping the patients’ backs for 10 minutes was the more effective treatment. ‘The effect of pulsed radio frequency is fast and without adverse events,’ Dr Napoli said.
